JEB is an abbreviation for Junctional Epidermolysis Bullosa, which is a new name for a very old Belgian Draft Horse disease called Epitheliogenesis Imperfecto or Hairless Foal Disease. JEB is basically a lethal skin defect that is terminal. Foals afflicted with JEB are typically born alive and well, but quickly develop patches of hair and skin loss over points of their body. JEB is not a new problem for Belgian breeders, as the industry has been plagued with this annoyance for centuries.
After many years of genetic testing, researchers have isolated a gene site and developed a test to identify carriers, and non-carriers, of the disease. Non-carrier stallions that are bred with non-carrier mares result in 100% their offspring being non-carriers.
We are proud to announce that La Vegas T. Taylor is a non-carrier stallion and tested negative for this devastating disease.
